They came with the Independent Colony wagon train, one of four that came to Oregon in 1844. The train was led by Cornelius Gilliam and Michael Troutman Simmons (brother of Nancy Ann Simmons, who was the mother of Lethy Matthews who married John Livingston - son of Thomas Livingston). |

| (5) Thomas Livingston Born December 22, 1807, in Overton County, Tennessee Died May 3, 1885, in Douglas County, Oregon Buried in the Melrose Cemetery, west of Roseburg, Oregon Married Elizabeth Higgins (daughter of Wesley "Shanks" Higgins and Priscilla Poteet) in Clay County, Missouri The couple with their children then born emigrated to Oregon via the Barlow Road route in 1851. In 1853, Thomas took out a donation land claim near the present site of Dixonville, Oregon, east of Roseburg. Two girls and a boy were born after the couple were in Douglas County. Researchers seem certain that the couple had 13 children: (1) William Livingston - died in infancy in Missouri (2) Rebecca Livingston - died in infancy in Missouri (3) Samuel Livingston - born August 21, 1832, in Missouri and died February 21, 1861, in Roseburg, Oregon (4) John Livingston - born March 8, 1838, in Andrew County, Missouri. Died on May 20, 1923, in Roseburg, Oregon, at age of 85. Married Lethy Jane Matthews (daughter of Joshua Matthews and Nancy Ann Simmons). Volunteer for the Rogue River Indian War. The couple had eight children, one of whom was Delmar Carleton Livingston (grandfather of Robert Livingston Casebeer of Oregon, who furnished much of the information on this page) (5) Elijah Livingston - born May 20, 1840, in Missouri. Married Mary Boggs on May 19, 1871. Elijah was county treasurer in Douglas County, Oregon, from 1872 to 1874. He then became sheriff of the county from 1874 to 1876. The couple had one child, Belle Livingston. (6) Elisha Livingston - born April 22, 1842, in Missouri. Buried in Melrose Cemetery, Douglas County, Oregon. Volunteer for the Rogue River Indian War. Married Rachel E. Newman on August 28, 1867. The couple had eight children. (7) Jasper Dapp Livingston - born in 1844 in Missouri. Died on May 24, 1922, in Portland, Oregon. Buried in the IOOF Cemetery in Roseburg, Oregon. Married Alice Braden on November 12, 1866. The couple had six children (including Ira S. Livingston) (8) Martha June Livingston - born May 9, 1848, in Missouri. Died on June 20, 1876, in Missouri. Married Alonso Leonard Buell on April 15, 1869, in Douglas County. The couple had four children. (9) Newton Livingston - born 1850 in Livingston, Missouri. Died in 1925 in Portland, Oregon. Newton was sheriff for Grant County, Oregon, for two terms beginning in 1896 - elected on the Populist ticket. Married Mattie E. Newman in 1875. Both are buried in the Melrose Cemetery. He was survived by four daughters. One son, dying as a child from pneumonia. The couple had ten children. (10) Nancy Livingston - born in 1852 in Harrisburg, Oregon. Died in 1888. She is buried in the Roseburg, Oregon, Masonic Cemetery. She married Raphael Benton Dixon on May 4, 1871. The couple had four children. (11) Louisa F. Livingston - born in 1855 in Douglas County, Oregon. Married Benjamin Franklin Hankins on September 5, 1880. She is buried in the IOOF Cemetery in Roseburg, Oregon. (12) James T. Livingston - born in 1857 in Douglas County, Oregon. Died in 1877 in Roseburg, Oregon. Buried in the Livingston-Dixon Cemetery east of Dixonville. Married Alice Braden on November 12, 1866. (13) Mary Priscilla Livingston - born March 16, 1846, in Missouri. Died on August 29, 1861. Buried in the Livingston-Dixon Cemetery. Married Matthew Neeves in 1860. The couple had one child, Mary A. Neeves. It is thought that Mary Priscilla died in childbirth. |
