Morgan lived in Brownwood, Texas, and later, Coleman County, Texas. In 1883, he moved to New Mexico, driving 300 head of cattle across the Pecos. He subsequently settled in the southern Guadalupe Mountains, first in Queen in 1883, next in Dark Canyon in 1888, then in Lincoln County, New Mexico in 1888, with his herd increased to more than 3,000 head. Morgan moved his ranching operations east of the Pecos where there was more range land. He first bought a large ranch on the Pecos known as Pearce Canyon and later in 1903 moved the ML brand headquarters ranch farther east to a 160 acre homestead on the grassy plains some 35 miles southeast of the present city of Carlsbad. He moved his family to Vaud (now town of Loving) in 1889 and to Carlsbad in 1898. It was at Carlsbad that Morgan bought into the S. F. Bidding Bank in 1904. He later bought out Biddings entirely and opened the National Bank of Carlsbad. He served as president until his death in 1917. Per the "West of the Pecos Museum", Morgan was a participant in the first recorded rodeo in Pecos, Texas, on July 4, 1883. Per documents at the Family History Center in Carlsbad, New Mexico, Morgan was the first millionaire in Eddy County, New Mexico. Livingston Ridge in the southeast corner of New Mexico is named for Morgan. |
