John Jones Moore was born November 11, 1843, in Tallegega County, Alabama. He is buried at Pleasant Hill Cemetery near Hatfield, Polk County, Arkansas and there is a Confederate marker on his grave. (Confederate Pension Application # 2241, Microfilm Roll # 6, on file in Oklahoma Historical Building, Division of Library Resources)

John is the 3rd child of Shadrick J. Moore and Tacy Jones. In 1845 the Moore family moved westward, settling in Kemper County, Mississippi. The 1850 Mississippi census lists the following children: Tabitha, Emily, John J., Edneyu I. Shadrick M. In 1853 they moved west to to Rusk, Cherokee County, Texas.

John's father (Rev. S. J. Moore) was licensed by the Methodist Church South to preach in 1854. Tabitha C. Moore married Marcus Morris on September 10, 1855. Absey Levicy Emily Moore married John Anthony Hensley on August 11, 1858. John was the oldest child living at home and the family's principal income was from farming as reported on the 1860 census

By 1862 the war between the states had developed and John left his home in June to enlist in the Confederate Army. He served in the Infantry, Ochiltree's Regiment, Maples Company, Young's Brigade until the spring of 1863. He then contracted measles and was released from the army at Pine Bluff, Arkansas. John made his way home to Rusk, Texas, on foot, hiding in the woods for days with fever so high he was delirious and had lost all track of time. He had to swim the Red River and probably several other creeks and streams before he finally arrived at Rusk. He remained home until the autumn of 1863. At this time he joined the Cavalry, Company T., Martin's Regiment, Gano's Brigade and served until the end of the Civil War in 1865. He was honorably discharged at Richmond, Fort Bend County, Texas. During the three years he had spent in the army he was only slightly wounded in the right arm while fighting in The Battle of Pea Ridge in Arkansas. During the time John was in the Civil War, two brothers, William and James, were born. William was Shadrick and Tacy's eleventh and James the twelfth child. Four other children, all daughters were born at Rusk, Texas prior to 1860. They were Lavina, Rebecca, Mary and Susan. John married Miss Jane Hensley of Rusk, Texas in September after he returned from the war. Their marriage license was filed in the Cherokee County Courthouse on page 54 as John J. Moore and N.O.J. Hensley, September 8, 1865. Jane was born February 13, 1846 in Morgan County, Alabama. Her parents were Samuel Hensley and Orlinda Stover. Samuel was born in Tennessee in 1814 and Orlinda was born in Alabama in 1820. Their marriage license is on file at the Lawrence County Courthouse in Moulton, Alabama. They were married February 7, 1838. Samuel and Orlinda had eleven children: John, Malinda, Mary Susan, Sarah Margaret, Jane, Rebecca, Casa L. Madison, all born in Alabama, M. (f), E. (f), Elijah and G. W. (m) all born in Texas. Initials only were listed in the 1860 census. Samuel moved his family to Rusk, Texas about the same time Shadrick's family arrived in 1853. Samuel's occupation in the 1850 Alabama census was listed as overseer. This may have meant he watched over a plantation. Before 1870, John and Jane moved to Arkansas and settled near Old Dallas at a settlement called Rocky. Eleven childen were born to Jane and John by 1889. They were: James Napoleon, Emmer L., Tacy Lula, Samuel Shade, John Wesley, Moody Zack, Mary Dixie, William F., Annie A., Joseph Lafayette, and Ode Cleveland. On December 31, 1889, Jane died at the age of 43, suffering from breast cancer. Her youngest child, Ode Cleveland, was only 11 months old. John moved to Indian Territory in what is now Zafra, Oklahoma. He settled on Mountain Fork River and lived on a large farm with his children until the age of about 70. He then left the farm to live with his son, Joe, at Zafra, Oklahoma. On Monday, February 19, 1934 John died a natural death of old age. He was 90 years, 3 months and 8 days old. He had fifty-three grandchildren and fifty-four great grandchildren at the time of his death. The newspaper was quoted as writing "Monday, February 19, saw the passing of another Confederate Soldier and old settler of the highlands, and eastern Oklahoma, and known to hundreds of friends throughout the county as "Uncle Jim". John Jones Moore was many things - a Christian early in life, a dedicated family man, a devoted soldier, a talented blacksmith, and a wise woodsman knowledgeable about nature's bounty, using its herbs, tree barks, etc. to heal both man and animal.
